Adult Orthodontics Q & A

What is an orthodontic emergency?

True orthodontic emergencies are rare, which can help ease anxieties for both kids and adults. Some examples of orthodontic emergencies include:

  • Trauma to your face, mouth, or teeth
  • Severe mouth pain that is not manageable
  • Infection or significant swelling in your gums, face, or mouth

In certain cases, orthodontic emergencies occur in conjunction with medical emergencies, and therefore should be treated in the nearest emergency room.

If you suffer a broken or visibly damaged tooth, your primary dentist might be the best place to turn for initial care. Dr. Abar can repair your braces and adjust your orthodontic treatment plan once your dental and medical issues are properly addressed.

What are some other urgent orthodontic needs?

The more common type of orthodontic “emergency” involves damaged brackets or wires that cause discomfort. Examples include a bracket that has popped off the surface of a tooth, a wire that has bent or comes loose and is poking the soft tissues of your lips or gums, or an area of tissue that has become infected due to excess friction or a puncture.

While none of these conditions meets the conventional standard of an emergency, it’s no fun to have your braces create pain or distraction in your day. As a part of the Danville Orthodontic family, you’re always welcome to contact the office to find a time to have your issue repaired or addressed.

In many cases, a team member can advise you on how to soothe discomfort on your own, making it easier to wait for your appointment time.

How can I prevent orthodontic emergencies?

There are some events that simply cannot be prevented, such as car accidents, falls, and certain other traumatic injuries. However, there are steps you can take to avoid many of the more common sources of orthodontic discomfort.

When you first have braces put on, expect a degree of discomfort as your body adjusts. The soft tissues in your mouth may feel raw and sore, but those sensations will usually ease after your mouth becomes accustomed to the new source of friction.

Dental wax and periodic rinsing with a warm saltwater solution can help, especially in the first days after getting braces or having them adjusted.

If the components of your braces shift and begin to cause discomfort, you may be able to find relief by carefully repositioning wires using tweezers or bending the ends with a pencil eraser. If you lose a bracket, try to wrap it in a paper towel and bring it to your next appointment.

Don’t hesitate to contact Danville Orthodontics if you encounter an orthodontic emergency or sudden discomfort. You can reach the office online or by phone.
